My physiology professor showed us this video and it quite honestly made me sad. I mean, listen to the guy- he's hardly making any sense, yet he sounds so happy, like he's just living his best life. Imagining living like this, unaware that you're making very little sense yet being so happy... I don't know, it just makes me kind of sad.

“I hope the world laughs for you” is the best quote I’ve heard in a very long time- I hope I can remember it to say to people- that really put a smile on my face- haven’t smiled like that in so long- thank you, sir!!

Ive talked like this under a great influence of LSD. chopped up poetry talk because of the neurons firing every and each wrong way. Im 31 now, and did a lot of LSD... Well not a lot, but would randomly do heroic doses of like 2-6 tabs at once about twice a week on and off for about the span of a half year. Which kinda is a lot at once. Obviously i wouldn't reccomend doing that, but ever since then i learned so much in such great ways, but also became a hardcore opiate junkie for half the rest of my life after, because of my confident ego after so many ego deaths back then which is ironic hahaha. Anyway, ill never forget when i couldn't speak straight, and my mantra was to the tune of let it be because my friend wouldn't leave his phone alone after having it on the charger at near dead battery. They were tripping too, and i tried to make them avoid playing on the phone and freaking out past the jungle of pixels by singing "let it charge, let it barge. Homer simpson lisa marge" Yeah idk. Im a nut case. But ill never forget sounding like this guy while tripping.

It’s cool that even though his ability to pick out the words he wants is diminished, his brain still seems to recall conversational structure and tone so that when someone says “Thank you” to him and ends the conversation, he still can immediately reply with “thanks, I appreciate that” because he still recalls fundamental aspects of conversation

He speaks exactly like a non-native English speaker only without the native language accent. Imagine him speaking with a heavy spanish accent, or french, and it you begin to understand what the brain needs to do to get through this. He basically needs to learn to speak a new language, and develop the nuro pathways to circumnavigate the ones that were damaged by his stroke. That is exactly what it is like to learn a foreign language later in life. We need to find and exercise new pathways in our brain, and the more we use them by practicing that new language, the more fluent we become.

This is beautiful. He communicates very well. This short vid reminded me when Charles Winchester from MASH got a recording from his sister who had a stutter as before he reprimanded a Soldier for bullying another who was speech impaired. The tone of your words speak for your heart.

Thank you Mike!!!!! I work with people that have had strokes, and this is a good example of how in Broca’s aphasia communication ability can depend on the LISTENER as well. Give people with Broca’s time to talk, tune into what they are saying verbally and nonverbally, and check back with them for understanding. His wife is a great help because she’s not speaking for him but helping clarify important points in what is being said or helping with a word someone gets close to but not quite. It can help people with Broca’s work on confidence in speaking because some people will be too anxious or self-conscious to try to talk with other people…and feeling that way when trying to speak with Broca’s usually makes the speaking WORSE for the person trying to speak. Think about this to help out people like Mike you might meet!!!

This comment might not reach Mr. Mike but I’ll give it a shot, because why not? 😅 My grandfather had a stroke around 10 years ago. I was 16. I did not understand what was going on, because I the most intelligent man I knew started to become quiet. What kills me the most is that I know he’s in there, cognition intact. But he can’t just put his thoughts into words. Mr. Mike, your positive demeanor is reminding me why I do what I do. Please, please be patient with (and kind) to yourself. You probably are but just wanted to remind you in case you ever forget 😊 There is a world out here who salutes you and loves you, quite frankly. P.S. I’m a medical doctor and you have sparked something in me that I haven’t felt in a long time. It feels like Sunshine. 😊 P.P.S. Hugs to everyone reading this, especially to those who are suffering from aphasia, and their families who are trying their best to stay strong for them. ❤

Man, sometimes I have moments where I know what I want to say but It's almost like I cant see what the words are in my brain and I have to sit and stew until my brain clears up. The way he concentrates on his words kind of reminds me of that. Of course my little brain quirk happens pretty rarely and it's nowhere near this level, my heart goes out to this person, but I wonder if it happens because of the same reasons internally.

I'm glad she's translating because it seems like he's describing actions in present tense as it plays out sometimes. Like the cruise part he says he stayed with the water for a moment and talked with the people, that's basically what you do on a cruise. You see the water and you talk to people if you like as well
